Kingston's Olympic Legacy: The 50th Anniversary of the 1976 Games

2026 marks the 50th anniversary of the 1976 Olympic Games hosted in Montreal, Quebec. The majority of the ‘76 games took place in Montreal, with the sailing events being held in Kingston, Ontario at Portsmouth's Olympic Harbour. Renamed for the games, Portsmouth Olympic Harbour, was originally constructed in 1969 and refurbished in 1974 for the ’76 Olympic Sailing events. Kingston was selected for the sailing events due to its proximity to Montreal and the optimal sailing and spectating conditions of the harbour. The sailing program took place from July 19th to July 27th, with the events being divided into six boat classes; Finn, 470, Flying Dutchman, Tornado, Tempest, and Soling Class.

In 1976, Canada made history as the first host nation of a summer games not to win any gold medals. Despite the lack of gold medals, the games were a big success that helped showcase Canada's passion, excellence, and hospitality on the world stage. The spirit and enthusiasm for the Olympics is not built on gold medals, but on international unity and cooperation. The games represent a global ideal that nations and peoples from all around the world can join together in celebration of their countries and athletes. The following collection features items that showcase Kingston’s role as the host of the sailing events, and the excitement felt across the country in hosting Canada’s first Summer Olympic Games.
