Description

Small flag from the 1976 Montreal Olympics. Rectangular flag with red background, featuring the logo for the Montreal Olympics in white in the centre, comprised of the five interlocking Olympic rings with three arches (a taller one in the centre flanked by two shorter ones) extending up from the top rings. The text "montréal 76" is below the logo in stylized white font. The flag is attached to a black plastic flag pole and base.

History

In 1976, Montreal hosted the Summer Olympic Games, the XXIst Olympiad. The events largely took place in Montreal, but some were held elsewhere; for example, Kingston was chosen as the location for the sailing events, which were held at Portsmouth Olympic Harbour between 19-27 July 1976.

The official logo of the 1976 Montreal Olympics, featured in the centre of this flag, was designed by Georges Huel, who wanted a simple, clean design. The Olympic rings are a central feature of the logo, to which a few other elements have been added. The three arches extending up from the top three rings create a stylized 'M' for Montreal. The M also represents the three stages of the podium where winners receive their medals. The top curve of the central arch connects to the bottom of the central Olympic ring, representing the oval-shaped stadium track that is a key part of the Summer Games.

This flag is a variant of the official Montreal Olympic flag, which was the white Montreal Olympic logo on a red background. Variations of the design were used on large flags, banners, and table flags. This version of the flag includes text below the logo ("montréal 1976").
