Description

Sculpture entitled "Staking Shapes" by Walter Redinger. Abstract, large-scale sculpture comprised of three sections. Made of molded fiberglass painted black with a rough, pebbly surface texture. Sits on a purpose-made concrete base.

History

This sculpture was created in conjunction with the 1976 Summer Olympics, which were hosted in Montreal, but with the sailing events held in Kingston at Portsmouth Olympic Harbour. It was commissioned as part of a competition through the Kingston Sculpture Symposium at the Agnes Etherington Art Centre in 1976. This event was a national, invitational sculpture competition funded by the Kingston Olympic Public Events Committee, Wintario, and the Canada Council. Twenty Canadian sculptors from across Canada were invited to participate. The purpose of the project was to present a representative cross section of contemporary Canadian sculptural activity to the citizens of Kingston, in addition to providing the city of Kingston with a lasting cultural contribution from the 1976 Olympic Arts and Culture Program.

Walter Redinger (1940 - 2014) was a Canadian sculptor, best known for large-cast fiberglass works that resembled fleshy shapes. He was one of the earliest sculptors in Canada to use fibreglass.
