History

This piece was used to hold an Olympic flame during the Olympic sailing events held in Kingston in the summer of 1976. In that year, Montreal hosted the Olympic Games, the XXIst Olympiad, but some events were held in other locations, Kingston was chosen as the location for the sailing events, which were held at Portsmouth Olympic Harbour between July 19th to 27th, 1976.

As part of the sailing events, artist Ted Bieler agreed to an Olympic flame being installed within his sculpture "Tetra". His piece had been commissioned by the Federal Government as a gift to mark Kingston’s Tercentenary in 1973. The smaller inverted tetrahedron held the flame, and was installed on the largest tetrahedron of "Tetra". This piece was removed at the end of the games and installed nearby with a commemorative plaque dedicated to Kingston citizens and volunteers who supported CORK (Canadian Olympic-training Regatta, Kingston) and the Olympic sailing events.
