Description

A bronzed round-mouthed metal gardening shovel with a d-grip handle. The shovel has three commemorative plaques on the front of the shovel's blade face. The plaque in the upper left corner reads "Donated by B. Robb". The plaque on the bottom centre of the blade reads "Barriefield Rock Garden Inaugural May 26 1991" along with some of the names of officials involved with the project. The plaque on the centre left of the blade reads "Maple Tree From German Army Korp to 1st Canadian Division and Canada Barriefield Rock Garden May 21, 1996".

History

The shovel was purchased by Bill Robb, a retired Bell Canada linesman and Chairman of the Committee of the Barriefield Rock Garden Project, credited as being instrumental in devising the project, in February of 1991. The shovel was intended for ceremonial purposes at the Inauguration of the garden on the 26th of May 1991 at 14:00. The shovel was intended to be thence displayed in a case in the Pittsburgh Township Office. In March of 1991 Bill Robb had the shovel bronzed. The Pittsburgh Township amalgamated with the City of Kingston and Kingston Township in 1998, establishing the current City of Kingston. The shovel was used again at the ceremonial planting of a maple tree on the 21st of May 1996 which was gifted from the German Army Korp to the 1st Canadian Division.
